Flooding is affecting New Plymouth

If you, your family and/or your property are at risk, contact emergency services immediately on 111. 

What you should do:  

• Be ready to act quickly. Flooding can happen quickly and without warning. Be ready to act and have a grab bag ready in case of evacuation.  Find out what to take here.

• If you see water rising quickly, do not wait for official warnings, head for higher ground immediately if it is safe to do so.   

• Do not try to walk, swim or drive through floodwaters – the water does not have to be very deep or moving very fast before it can carry you or your car away.   

• Always assume that floodwater is potentially contaminated with animal or human sewage.

• Ensure hands, clothes and property are thoroughly cleaned after contact with floodwaters.

• Prepare for potential power outages - charge devices and have an alternate source of heating available making sure you have good ventilation, bring pets indoors

• Many roads may be impacted and all non-essential travel should be avoided. If you must travel, keep emergency supplies in your vehicle  including warm clothes, sleeping bags and blankets.

• Check State Highway traffic and travel updates from NZTA Otago Updates and your District Council website for local roading information

• Follow the instructions and advice of emergency services and Civil Defence authorities.
